WWE Extreme Rules 2014: 5 things that WWE did wrong

The Extreme Rules pay-per-view had a good share of intriguing moments and storytelling which made it go down in the books as an excellent show. All the major members of the so called newer generation picked up excellent wins at the pay-per-view which marked the companys willingness to change with the winds. It surely had a lot of moments and matches that were worth remembering but there were certain decisions, which if reversed wouldve made the pay-per-view perfect. Looking back, WWE will be cursing themselves for making those decisions so here is a look at some of them.

#5 Wee-LC in pre-show

New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE

Was it me or was the match between El Torito and Hornswoggle really entertaining? It would sound like a joke at first but it was a good visual spectacle due to the efforts put in by everyone who was involved.

To start with the miniature props were something new for everyone and adding it was clearly extreme when the two small men decided to make full use of them. 3MB and the Los Matadores also took some nasty bumps through the match which was also a nice touch.

It was surely a match of pay-per-view quality as it had the entertainment factor and the extreme factor which went hand in hand.

WWE could’ve easily find out some time for this one on the main card because everyone associated with it deserved for the sheer amount of heart they put into the match.

#4 Burying Jack Swagger

When the Real Americans split, it was sure that Swagger will be having a tough time adapting to the life out of the tag team division.

The weeks which followed said the same as he failed to find any kind of momentum inside the squared circle picking up loss after loss. His feud with Cesaro was going nowhere and WWE couldn’t just find him another tag team partner as well.

The triple threat match at Extreme Rules had its potential to give Swagger some momentum but WWE decided to make it elimination rules so that Swagger could be simply buried.

A triple threat match without the elimination rules and Rob Van Dam getting pinned by Cesaro would’ve been given Swagger some credibility for whatever WWE is planning to use him for.

#3 Ill usage of palate cleansers

One of the biggest blunders that WWE did with Extreme Rules was the way they lined up the matches. Apart from the pre-show, the main matches were placed in an ill manner which didn’t help the fans by any bit.

Coming into the match, there were three matches which were worth of becoming the main event for the night. And WWE decided to throw them out one after the other without giving the fans any time to settle down.

Having Shield’s match early in the night was the first mistake that happened as it had all the ammunition to close the night. The steel cage match followed right after that without any match to let the crowd settle.

Though the Paige- Tamina bout was in between the steel cage match and the WWE championship match, the fans only were invested in the latter once it reached near the mid part. The lack of time between the major matches and not letting the much hyped match to be the show stopper was a decision which didn’t sit well.

#2 Portraying Bray Wyatt as a heel rather than a monster

The most brilliant aspect about Bray Wyatt’s character is that he stands out from the rest of the heels due to his twisted way. Be it with his promos or be it with his unorthodox in ring moves, Bray always managed to build a unique aura.

It was there to be seen in the match at Royal Rumble against Daniel Bryan where he turned out to be the monster that no one wanted to face. With the buildup that WWE gave for the match what the fans wanted to see was Bray coming out strong just like Rumble.

But instead what we got was a weak Bray Wyatt who had to rely on others to keep Cena escaping from the cage. Cena during one segment quoted to Bray that “Take away your family and your nothing”.

That quote clearly was a big blow to Bray and proving it right at Extreme Rules was a bigger blow to his character. Knowing the potential that Bray has, WWE should’ve booked him more intelligently and gave him the upper hand over Cena.

#1 Letting Shield Win

So the whole point of Evolution reuniting was just so that Shield could get a big win under their belt and nothing more?

That was the question most of the WWE fans were left with when Shield got the win fair and clear against Evolution. A stable which is considered as one of the best heel factions in the history of WWE, reunites after a long time to only knock out Shield once and lose out to them on pay-per-view.

To make matters worse, they even allowed Batista to be pinned. He is going to be out of television for some time and having him take the fall was something which shouldn’t have happened.

Now that Shield has won the match, the continuation of the narrative is up in the air as the babyface team has no motive to fight with the heels again.
