The Intercontinental championship has had a legacy like no other title in the WWE. Superstars like the Honky Tonk Man, Chris Jericho, Mr Perfect etc have used the title as a stepping stone in their WWE careers. Now a days, the picture is different. The title keeps getting shuffled between lower mid carders on a constant basis. The WWE hence came up with a beat the clock challenge to zero in on a numer one contender for the title. RVD overcame the odds to set up a date with the champion Barrett at Payback. Let us look at the outcomes of the match.
#1 Bad news Barrett wins
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news for you in case you thought that RVD was going to win his maiden title in the WWE post his return. Yes! that’s right, Bad News Barrett looks most likely to edge past his challenger to extend his time as the Intercontinental champion.
RVD being the lovable veteran that he is will most likely put over Barrett to give the young guy some credibility. Besides this, RVD seems to be making sporadic appearences in the WWE and the details of his contract are not yet clear. The WWE may not risk the issue and give RVD a title run.
So, a bullhammer to the head is all that its going to take.
#2 Van Dam wins
Even though this seems very unlikely, the WWE may entrust RVD with another title run. He was a former Intercontinental champion in his own rights and will not refuse another bite of the cherry.
Bad News Barrett has received much flak after attacking the veteran from the back and RVD will look to teach the former Nexus leader a lesson in respect. The match will no doubt be an entertaining one with both supertstars very different in their styles. But still considering an RVD win would be optimisitic stuff.
#3 Disqualification
This is one of those matches that might actually end in a DQ. Barrett has never been a ‘clean’ player of the game and he may do more than what is required to remain champion after Payback.
The stories of heel champions causing disqualifications or turning on referees has been very common in the WWE and Barrett will pretty much fit that style of play. This plan maybe incorporated by the WWE to help Barrett retain the title and give RVD a win. Thus, doing exactly what they want to do with the intended results.
So, a DQ is clearly a possiblity considering Barrett’s history in such bouts.
