It hasn’t been the best of times, but it certainly also hasn’t been the worst either. The Divas division has taken some steps forward this year. It has been considerably been better than what it was a couple of unfortunate years ago. There hasn’t been a rivalry that has revitalized the division, but it’ll get there. For once, there are two segments dedicated to a divas storyline in almost every Raw. And it has had a strong presence this year than the year before. As the year comes to an end, we take a look at the five best women in the WWE in 2014.
#6 Honourable Mention: Renee Young
Renee Young has been a breath of fresh air as far as the interviewing scene goes in the WWE. Her knowledge about wrestling combined with her personality has really made her a regular on every WWE show.
She has often said that her goal is to be a commentator on the biggest of WWE shows. That goal saw its foundation been set as she was made the commentator for NXT and WWE Superstars.
She’s arguably the most recognized interviewer in the WWE right now and this, hopefully, will pave her way to the main announcers booth.
#5 Lana
Lana, like Young, hasn’t wrestled a single match in the WWE. But, like Young, she boasts of a strong personality. It is doubtful if Rusev’s gimmick and character could be as intimidating if Lana wasn’t his manager.
Her Russian accent, the hairstyles and her posture all combine to give Lana a ravishing look and she has lived up to that tag she carries along with her- The ravishing Russian.
Even if most of her promos have been about being proud to be a Russian and condemning America, they have never been boring.
#4 AJ Lee
AJ Lee has had a pretty eventful year, but arguably it didn’t have much of an impact. For most parts of the year, she was the Divas Champion. But she was involved in a feud with Paige which never really reached a level of intensity that it was initially expected to.
And to add to that, her marriage to Punk has resulted in many fans chanting Punk’s name during her matches, which is not her fault at all, needless to say.
There have been rife speculations that she might be leaving the WWE, on multiple occasions. But it has been a relief that she is still there.
She is arguably the face of the Divas Division, a good wrestler and promo worker. Her presence in the commentary booth have been stellar and her stint on the mic has been better than every diva in that locker room. These reasons are enough to have her on this list.
#3 Paige
Paige made her much-awaited debut on the main roster a night after Wrestlemania and that night always usually ends up being eventful for being the go home show of the grandest event. She beat AJ in a short match to some major delight from the fans in the arena. It might as well be the biggest pop that a diva has received on a victory in a long, long time.
Even though her feud with AJ didn’t meet the high expectations set for it, her arrival did lead to many decent matches with many divas. Sh did bring a certain aggression to this division which has been unseen for a while.
If Survivor Series was any indication, she is over with the crowd. She just needs a new rival.
#2 Charlotte
Despite being a one hour show, it has given all its divas some character.
Charlotte has shown some major growth as a wrestler and moved beyond being the daughter of Ric Flair. She has carved her own niche in NXT and her arrival to the main roster is much awaited. And maybe, she and Paige can get on with their rivalry.
#1 Stephanie McMahon
It helps that she’s the boss’s daughter and it helps that she has creative control over her character, but nobody has played a heel quite like Stephanie McMahon this year.
Nobody.
Not even her husband, not even Seth Rollins, not even the other members of the Authority combined.
She was the nastiest of them all. She sold every victory, every loss, every triumphant moment to every embarrassing moment to the core.
The biggest part of the Authority surviving this long has to be credited to Stephanie majorly. Her match against Brie Bella exceeded expectations and her presence in every segment she was involved in, made that segment better.
She is the diva of the year, to be honest.
P.S. The Bellas have been having some major screen time and they’ve had an eventful year as well, with one really good match to their credit but their array of bad back and forth promos and that sudden, incomprehensive Brie Bella heel turn have contributed enough for them to be not on this list.
