The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (4-5) will play host to the Georgia Southern Eagles (5-4) on Thursday night. After back-to-back conference wins, the Eagles lost a close one to the South Alabama Jaguars, 38-31. Georgia Southern held a 31-17 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Jaguars, led by RB La'Damian Webb, scored 21 unanswered points to edge out the Eagles. GSU quarterback Kyle Vantrease played admirably, going 28-of-45 for 278 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles were outrushed, 321-88.
The Ragin' Cajuns also lost a close game, falling to the Troy Trojans 23-17. Like the Eagles, they held a commanding lead midway through the third quarter, but squandered it after a trio of Trojan touchdowns. Quarterback Ben Wooldridge had a tough afternoon, going 13-of-29 for 112 yards with no scores.

Tale of the Tape
The Georgia Southern Eagles are in year nine of FBS competition. They have faired well in the Sun Belt, making four bowl games and winning nine games three times. Former USC head coach Clay Helton led the Eagles this season, but QB Kyle Vantrease runs the offense. Vantrease leads the Sun Belt in pass attempts (418) and passing yards (2,976), but also in passing interceptions (13). He is behind Chase Brice and Grayson McCall for the league lead in passing touchdowns with 20. Outside last week, the run game has been sensational, averaging 4.9 yards per pop on 31 rushes per game. Overall, they lead the conference in yards per game at 480.
The Eagles could use as much offense as possible, given the state of their run defense. GSU allows a league-worst 229 rushing yards per game on a laughable 5.6 yards per attempt. They at least hold opposing passers to under 61% completion, but that doesn't make up for the nearly 500 yards per game allowed.
After three straight double-digit win seasons, the University of Florida backed up the Brink's truck for coach Billy Napier. With him now navigating the rigors of the SEC, Louisiana turned to last season's OC, Michael Desormeaux, to lead them into a new era. At 4-5, the Ragin' Cajuns have already matched their loss total from the previous three seasons combined. Additionally, it's been difficult for the Cajuns to find consistency on offense with three-year starting QB Levi Lewis gone pro. As a result, they rank in the bottom half of every offensive team's statistics, including rushing yards per attempt (3.8) and pass completion (56.1%). The quarterback play of Ben Wooldridge and Chandler Fields can be described as "safe, but effective," throwing 19 touchdowns against nine interceptions.
The Louisiana defense has been impressive this season, allowing 3.6 yards per attempt while keeping opposing passers to a 57.4% completion percentage. They force nearly three turnovers a game, the second-best mark in the Sun Belt.
Georgia Southern vs. Louisiana Prediction
There is a learning curve for the Louisiana football program this season. Georgia Southern's defense can barely stop a rush, but a date with a mediocre Louisiana offense may be what they need to put up a decent showing. Meanwhile, the GSU offense oozes firepower, giving the Eagles a clear advantage when they possess the football.
Prediction: Georgia Southern +3.5 (-110)
