The Asian Broadcasting Union (ABU) has signed a broadcast rights agreement with the organisers of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

This deal would ensure free-to-air coverage of the event to Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Mauritius, all of which will be sending athletes to compete in Glasgow next year.

Non- Commonwealth territories like Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Myanmar, North Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Timo Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam also will be provided coverage through ABU.

Glasgow 2014 has already had a host broadcaster agreement in place with the BBC, foreign rights contacts with Taj TV for the Indian subcontinent and SuperSport for sub-Saharan Africa. The ABU has also partnered previous Commonwealth Games.

“The ABU will deliver a multi-platform coverage that will expand the scope and reach of the Commonwealth Games throughout Asia creating new audiences in new countries,” said ABU general secretary Javad Mottaghi.

“It will also please the many Commonwealth ex-pats who live and work in Asia and rely on the ABU and its members to provide coverage of the Games.”

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games will take place from 23rd July to 3rd August next year.
