Beer Suffers as AIS Draw With India

TOWNSVILLE, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 12: Michael Beer of the AIS bowls during the Emerging Players Tournament match between the AIS and India at Endeavour Park on August 12, 2011 in Townsville, Australia.

India’s IPL starlets were kept at bay by gritty Australian Institute of Sports XI batting as their Emerging Players game ended in a draw. Australians, behind by 329 runs after India piled up 534 batted out the last day with Captain Ryan Carters making a century.

0-115

Australia’s test spinner Michael Beer was taken apart by the Indians going for a staggering 115 runs off 14 overs. He and fellow left arm tweaker John Holland were wicket less in the game where Saurabh Tiwary, Ajinkya Rahane and Ashok Menaria scored centuries.

This further casts doubts over Beer’s selection for the Test series in Sri Lanka where he and Nathan Lyon were thrust into the team ahead of ODI spinners Xavier Doherty and Steven Smith.Michael Beer played his solitary game in last years ‘Ashes series, taking one wicket and giving away 100 odd runs.Beer was drafted in to replace Doherty midway through the Ashes series as Australia’s depth of slow bowlers was severely tested.

Shane Warne spoke well of Beer as a future spinner last year but he too was surprised when he earned his test cap in his first full first class season.
