The former world number 1, Ana Ivanovic was defeated by Swede Johanna Larsson in the first round of the French Open this year. The 110th French Open has brought to us many surprises in the first two days, with Ana being the latest to join the casualty list as she was defeated 7-6(3), 0-6 , 6-2 by the Swede in almost two hours.
The beauty from Serbia had met Larsson in Luxemburg last year where she easily defeated the Swede 6-3 6-0. Despite Ana being out of form, many expected a repeat of that performance, but it was not to be. The Swede matched each shot of Ivanovic’s equally and took the first set to a tiebreaker, which she eventually won 7-3, thanks to Ivanovic’s unforced errors. The second set saw the return of the Serb as she was at her best as she ruthlessly took the second set 6-0, showing shades of her lost glory again. If people thought this was the start of a comeback, they were proven wrong by the Swede as after exchanging breaks of serves in the first two games, she eventually went on to take the set 6-2, thus knocking Ivanovic out of this year’s French Open.
Larrson now faces Russian Ekaterina Makarova. Makarova moved into the second round after surviving a mid match lapse against Italian Romina Oprandi in her first round match. The Russian secured a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 win against the Italian earlier today.
