The Indian archery team has a strong squad for the Asian Games to be held from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China. Atanu Das had failed to make it through last year, but the rub of the green favoured him after the tournament had to be postponed due to issues surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fresh trials were held earlier this year at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Sonipat where Das managed to cement her place in the Indian team for the Asian Games. However, Atanu’s wife and former World No.1 Deepika Kumari missed the bus.

Deepika ended seventh when the first phase of the trials took place earlier this year in Kolkata. However, after finishing ninth in the trials in Sonipat, she missed out. Deepika recently returned to Indian Archery Squad after becoming a mother last year.

Atanu, in the meantime, made a comeback to the Indian team for the first time since taking part in the Tokyo Olympics two years ago. He finished second in the men’s recurve trials after Dhiraj Bommadevara. Back in 2022, Das also won the gold medal in the National Games.

Jayanta Talukdar, who represented India in the Tokyo Olympics and won the individual gold medal in the Indian Archery World Cup back in 2006, is not a part of the squad for Asian Games 2023. He also won the gold medals in the 2007 (recurve team) and 2013 (mixed team) Asian Archery Championships in Xian and Taipei respectively

Abhishek Verma, Prathamesh Jawkar, Ojas Pravin Deotale and Rajat Chauhan form the men’s compound team. The women’s compound team comprises of Parneet Kaur, Avneet Kaur, Aditi Gopichand Swami, and Jyothi Surekha Vennam. It now remains to be seen if the Indian team can win medals in Indian Archery in the Asian Games 2023.
