Barcelona new-boy Cesc Fabregas has expressed his delight after scoring for the Catalans in their UEFA Super Cup win over FC Porto. The former Arsenal midfielder came off the bench and collected a delightful chip from Messi before firing the ball into the net past a hapless Helton.
This was Fabregas’ third trophy in as many matches for Barcelona following a €36M move from the Emirates. Fabregas had earlier participated and won the Spanish Super Cup (5-4 agg. vs. Real Madrid) and Joan Gamper Trophy (5-0 vs. Napoli) since his transfer.
“I didn’t really come here just to win trophies, I am just very happy to score a goal and happy for the team.”
The former Arsenal skipper was all praise for Lionel Messi who scored the first and assisted the second goal on the night.
“I’ve not played with Messi for some time but I played with him for five years before so trust me I know him. He sees special passes and scores special goals, and I took the chance and he saw me.”
Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola described the team’s second as “a beautiful goal” and praised Fabregas and Messi.
“Cesc is a very, very good player. He has everything it takes to play good football in midfield and arrive behind the main striker. His goal was a very good pass from Leo and then a very good piece of control from Cesc because he controlled the ball quickly and shot very well. We have tried to help him get into the best condition as soon as possible and he will help us try to make a very good season.”
