Betting on Sports should be made Legal

There has been lot of negativity hounded by media regarding Betting and Spot Fixing Controversy erupted during the concluded Indian Premier League. Spot Fixing is a crime and it becomes larger, when any player is involved. It’s not good for the reputation of sports and people involved with it. The players involved in Match Fixing or Spot fixing should be banned from the sports. Any sporting contest is like a battle and should be played by fair means and need to be competed hard with each other. But the players until proven guilty should not be taken on media trial. The media has to be fair on players also because their reputation and career is on stake. Our television media has got berserk on this issue. Where big money is involved, there is bound to be corruption. The blatant truth is that corruption has become inseparable existence of world economy.

Whereas Betting is concerned, the time has come in India that the government should make betting legal in the country. Betting is legal in lot of nations. It has been co-existent for very long time in our country. The pleasure of putting your money on your favorite team and player and then winning your bet and adding to your bank balance should not be missed. You may lose money also but it is a nice gamble. We invest on Stocks or Mutual Funds and take risk so that we can double or triple our money. But it takes time but Betting gives you opportunity to take that risk and get instant benefit. There is no guarantee of benefit but there is a chance. People in the country deserve a chance on this. We have people already betting illegally but legalizing betting will have more participation from the people. Betting is no crime. It is not affecting others. We can put money limit for people on betting. They can only bet money on 5% of their income. We should have legal betting agencies in the country.If Betting is made legal, match fixing and spot fixing can also reduce. The legal betting agencies will make sure that betting doesn’t cross the boundaries and reach the players. The government can earn lot of money through these betting agencies. The professional people with Chartered Accountancy should be involved running these betting agencies and we should have regular surveillance audits on these agencies. I also like to mention drinking, smoking and gambling are not good but indulgence sometimes on these activities are good stress busters. The Indian government should modernize with times. India is changing and so are people values. You don’t legalize, people will not stop and they will still bet money on sports. It is happening in lot of corporate offices. Betting happens between people. Betting on sports should be made Legal in India.
