Big Ben to ring in the Olympics

London, July 25 Big Ben, one of the most famous landmarks of London, will celebrate the opening day of the Olympic Games with a historic peel of bells.

Big Ben is the giant bell inside the tower in the House of Parliament and it will ring out 40 times during three minutes, starting at 0812 hours, exactly 12 hours before the opening ceremony is scheduled to begin in the Olympic Stadium, reports Xinhua.

It is the first time the bell has sounded outside of its normal schedule since Feb 15, 1952, when Big Ben sounded 56 times during the funeral of King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II.

Big Ben will chime as part of a project designed by artist Martin Creed, called ‘All the Bells’, which aims at bells across Britain being rung as quickly and as loudly as possible and which will almost certainly set a new world record for mass bell ringing.
