The Indian contingent produced their 3rd best show in Commonwealth games 2018 held at Gold Coast, Australia winning a total 66 medals including 26 Gold medals, 20 Silver, and 20 Bronze medals. Apart from few disappointments, the Indian athletes performed brilliantly, making the country proud with their efforts.
Behind Australia and England, India showed improvement from 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games where they finished 5th in the standings. A total of 115 Men and 103 women took part in the prestigious games. India's best performance came in the 2010 edition of Commonwealth Games 2010 where they had a total of 101 medals.
#1 Shooting
Shooting performed brilliantly during the Commonwealth Games 2018. It was a sport in which India was expected to win medals, which they did. In this tournament, 27 shooters took part in different disciplines. India won 7 Gold medals, 4 Silver, and 5 Bronze medals.
Heena Sidhu won two gold medals in Women’s 25 air meter pistol event and women’s 10-meter air pistol event. The 16-year-old Manu Bhaker playing her first CWG Games came first in the women’s 10-meter air pistol event.
Jitu Rai won the gold medal in Men’s 10-meter air pistol event. Shreyasi Singh, Anish Bhanwala, Tejaswini Sawant won gold medals in their respective events.
Tejaswini Sawant, Heena Sidhu, Mehuli Ghosh and Anjum Modugil won the silver medals.
While Apurvi Chandela, Ankur Mittal, Om Prakash Mitharwal won two bronze medals in his event, Ravi Kumar won a bronze medal for India in his respective event.
#2 Badminton
The Indian badminton team had great success in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games 2018. In total, the Indian badminton contingent won 2 gold medals, 3 Silver and 1 bronze medal. For the first time in Commonwealth history, the Indian mixed team consisting of PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Ashwini Ponappa, Ranki Reddy, Chirag Shetty, Pranav Chopra, Sikki Reddy, Gadd won the gold medal by beating 3 time defending champions and favourites Malaysia by 3-1.
In women singles event, Saina Nehwal defeated PV Sindhu to win the gold medal. It was a great performance by Saina who won the gold medal in Commonwealth Games after 8 years.
The new number 1 in badminton rankings for men, K Srikanth had to settle for Silver after losing to Malaysian star Lee Chong Wei in three sets. PV Sindhu won the silver medal after losing to the more experienced Saina Nehwal. Also, men’s doubles pair of Ranki Reddy and Shetty lost in the finals to England's Langridge and Smith in straight sets.
The women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki Reddy won the bronze medal beating Australian pair.
Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki Reddy finished 4th after losing the bronze medal match.
#3 Wrestling
The Indian wrestling contingent performed according to expectations as they won a medal in every category.
In Wrestling, India won 5 Gold medals, 3 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals.
The Two-time Olympic medallists Sushil Kumar won his third successive gold medal in Commonwealth Games. In 2018 edition, the Indian veteran won gold in Men’s freestyle 74 Kg, Rahul Aware won it in 57 men’s freestyle Kg, Vinesh Phogat did the job in women’s freestyle 50 Kg, Bajrang Punia in men’s freestyle 65 Kg and Sumit Malik in Men’s freestyle 125 Kg.
Babita Kumari, Pooja Dhanda, Mausam Khatri had to settle for silver medals in their respective events.
The Rio Olympic bronze medallist could not perform according to her abilities. She had to fight for bronze medal might against New Zealand Tyle and won the bronze medal in a close fought match. Somveer Kadian, Kiran Bishnoi, Divya Kakran stood at the podium for India.
#4 Table Tennis
Nobody expected the Indian team to perform so well in Table Tennis during Commonwealth Games 2018. In total, 3 golds, 2 Silver and 3 bronze medals were won by the Indian team. Indian women’s team defeated favourites Singapore by 3-1 to win team event while Men’s team defeated Nigeria by 3-0 to win the gold medal.
Manika Batra was involved in women’s team who the gold medal. Also, she created history by winning the gold medal in women’s single event.
Manika Batra and Mouma Das had to settle for the silver medal in women’s doubles event. In the men’s doubles, Sharath Achanta and Gnanasekaran won the silver medal losing to England pair.
Manika Batra also won the bronze medal in the mixed doubles event with Gnanasekaran. Sharath Achanta won bronze in men’s singles and men’s doubles pair of Desai and Sanil Shetty won bronze medals.
#5 Weightlifting
In the first few days of the Commonwealth Games 2018, Indian weightlifters started the medal account. In total, 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 bronze medals were won.
Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in women’s 48 Kg category, Sanjita Chanu won the coveted gold medal in women’s 53 Kg, Satish Sivalingam won gold in Men’s 77 Kg, Venkat Rahul made the country proud in Men’s 85 Kg, Punam Yadav in Women’s 69 Kg.
Pardeep Singh won the silver medal in Men’s 105 Kg, Poojary made the country proud in Men’s 56 Kg.
The 18-year-old Deepak Lather won the bronze medal in Men’s 69 Kg on 6th April. Sachin Chaudhary won the bronze medal in Men’s heavyweight category.
