India claimed yet another gold medal on the fifth day of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 as they beat Malaysia in the mixed team finals by winning 3 rounds to their 1.
Satwik Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponappa got India rolling as they beat Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh in the first match, which was a mixed doubles match.
Rankireddy and Ponappa won the first game but were taken to the third game by their Malaysian opponents. They won the final game by 21-15 to claim a victory.
The second match was Men's Singles in which Kidambi Srikanth defeated Lee Chong Wei in straight sets. The former world no. 1 felt the full force of the smashes of the current world no. 2 as he Srikanth came out on top with the scores of 21-14 and 21-17.
Malaysia, however, did not give up easily and came right back into the competition with a straight-sets win in the Men's doubles category. Rankireddy could not repeat his earlier exploits as the Malaysian team ran out winners, with a score of 21-15 and 22-20. Rankireddy was partnered with Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty and would lose to V. Shem Goh and Wee Kiong Tan.
Saina Nehwal was given the task to subdue any signs of a Malaysian comeback and she did the same after a hard-fought victory against Soniia Cheah. The Indian shuttler won the first game 21-11 after training early on. Saina lost the second game to Cheah but bounced back quickly to defeat Cheah 21-9, confirming India's Gold.
India is off to a great start in the badminton events and will be looking to continue the same energy and form going into the singles and doubles events as well.
