The Commonwealth Games (CWG) is officially underway and day one proved to be a lucrative hunting ground for the Indian contingent, winning one gold and one silver medal and setting the tone for things to come in Gold Coast. With India competing in several events on the first day, here are the highlight results from day one:
Basketball
The Indian women were up against Jamaica in round one but slumped to a 57-66 defeat in the opener, severely denting their chances of moving into the next round.
The men fared little better and despite having a 24 point lead at one stage, the men's team lost 96-87 to Cameroon. They will now have to win their next two games to qualify for the quarters.
Badminton
India showed their class in badminton on day one under the leadership of Saina Nehwal and K Srikanth, racing to an unassailable lead and handing out 5-0 thrashings each to both Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Widely considered a medal surety, badminton could prove key as India mounts a legitimate medal challenge.
Boxing
India's Manoj Kumar easily defeated Osita Umeh of Nigeria in the Round of 32 stage in Men's 69 kg category. Despite the recent accusations surrounding the Indian boxers, much is expected from the contingent at CWG.
Artistic Gymnastics
In a sport not necessarily associated with India, the contingent performed admirably but ended up in sixth position in the men's final after rotation 3. Rakesh Patra qualified for the finals in the rings event after finishing 5th.
Cycling
India's women's team was in action towards the end of day one and finished sixth in team's sprint qualifying.
Swimming
India started brilliantly in swimming this morning with Srihari Nataraj and Virdhawal Khade qualifying for the semi-finals but both failed to qualify for the final in backstroke and butterfly categories respectively.
Table Tennis
India excelled in this event on day one with highlights coming from a thrashing 3-0 win over Sri Lanka and another 3-1 win for the women against Wales. There were two 3-0 wins for the men against Trinidad & Tobago & Ireland.
Lawn Bowls
A disappointing outing saw India's Pinki lose 20-16 in Women's Singles Sectional Play and Wales beat India 23-9 in Men's Triples Sectional Play. Pinki then lost 11-21 to Katherine Rednall. However, the Indian men's team Papua New Guinea 16-11 in Men's Triples Sectional Play. But in Men's Pairs Section D, India lost 13-27 to Malaysia.
In Women's Four Section B, India beat Northern Ireland 18-10 but lost to Malta 15-20 in Round 2. In Men's Pairs Section D Round 2, India beat Niue 29-6.
Squash
The women led the way for India with Deepika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa entering the pre-quarters while Harinder Pal Sandhu and Saurav Ghosal bowed out in the second round and first round respectively. Vikram Malhotra progressed to the second round.
Hockey
The Indian women's Hockey team suffered a shock defeat against Wales as they lost 2-3 on the opening day.
Weightlifting
Muthupandi Raja may have finished sixth in the 62 kg category but the medals came from weightlifting on day one with P Gururaja winning silver by lifting 249 kg. Mirabai Chanu however, stole the show with her exceptional performance, lifting 86 kg (her personal best) in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk to win gold and set a world record in the process.
