New Delhi, 5 April 2010: Lawn bowls, a popular British sport is all set to debut at the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. The Eight Nation Invitational Lawn Bowls Event, which got inaugurated today, is being played at the state-of-the-art Jawaharlal Nehru stadium (also the main venue for the tournament) from the 6th to 10th of April 2010. The event is also being treated as a test event for the Games scheduled in October this year.
The event shall see participation from top Lawn Bowl playing nations viz; Australia, New Zealand, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Malaysia, South Africa along with the host nation India. The tournament is being played in singles pairs and triples format in both men and women categories.
The sport of Lawn Bowls is most popular in Australia, The United Kingdom, New Zealand and some other Commonwealth nations. The sport that can be played in the singles, or in teams of pairs, triples or fours format is generally played on a 34 to 40 meter square of closely cut grass called the ‘greens’. The greens are divided into playing areas called ‘rinks’.
The five day long event was inaugurated today in the presence of Ms. Sunaina Kumari, President, Lawn Bowls Federation of India (LBFI) and all the participating teams and their respective officials.
