Federer cruises through to fourth round at the US Open

Five time US Open Champion Roger Federer overcame windy conditions to defeat Paul Henry Mathieu of France 6-4 6-3 6-3 in straight sets. In the earlier matches fifth seeded Robin Soderling defeated Thiemo de Bakker 6-2 6-3 6-3. Soderling will now face Spain’s Albert Montanes in the fourth round, with Roger Federer a possible quarter-final opponent.French 17th seed Gael Monfils also advanced with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4 victory over Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic created a major shock in the tournament when he defeated Andy Roddick in the second round. Monfils will play with Richard Gasquet in an all-French battle after the 24-year-old defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.

In the women’s round up Maria Sharapova thrashed Beatrice Capra 6-0 6-0 to set up a clash with top seed Carline Wozniacki. Wozniacki moved to the fourth round with a 6-1 6-0 victory over Yung-Jan Chan. The Dane has dropped just three games in her three matches at Flushing Meadows so far. In a major upset Jelena Jankovic lost to Estonian 31st seed Kaia Kanepi.
