Five time US Open Champion Roger Federer overcame windy conditions to defeat Paul Henry Mathieu of France 6-4 6-3 6-3 in straight sets. It wasn’t a vintage Federer display as the weather played spoilsport on the sixth day at the Flushing Meadows but he delivered enough to secure a passage to the next round. Mardy Fish defeated Arnaud Clement 4-6 6-3 6-4 1-6 6-3 in a gruelling five setter at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.In the earlier matches fifth seeded Robin Soderling defeated Thiemo de Bakker 6-2 6-3 6-3. Soderling will now face Spain’s Albert Montanes in the fourth round, with Roger Federer a possible quarter-final opponent. French 17th seed Gael Monfils also advanced with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4 victory over Janko Tipsarevic. Tipsarevic created a major shock in the tournament when he defeated Andy Roddick in the second round. Monfils will play with Richard Gasquet in an all-French battle after the 24-year-old defeated South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-5. Third seed Novak Djokovic is also through after knocking out American James Blake 6-1 7-6 6-3.Djokovic next faces Mardy Fish in the fourth round.
In the women’s round up Maria Sharapova thrashed Beatrice Capra 6-0 6-0 to set up a clash with top seed Carline Wozniacki. Wozniacki moved to the fourth round with a 6-1 6-0 victory over Yung-Jan Chan. The Dane has dropped just three games in her three matches at Flushing Meadows so far. In a major upset fourth seeded Jelena Jankovic lost to Estonian 31st seed Kaia Kanepi. Jankovic clearly struggled under the windy conditons and committed a number of unforced errors to lose 6-2 7-6. 15th seeded Yalina Wickmayer defeated Patty Schynder 7-6 3-6 7-6 in a tightly contested encounter.Wickmayer will next play Kanepi.
Top seeded Rafael Nadal will be in action on Sunday against Gilles Simon at the Arthur Ashe stadium.
