The WC’s first phase is almost over. By Tomorrow all the teams would have played one match each. Its been a dull period so far with the headlines been hogged by Jabulani, Vuvuzela, Fancied teams stumbling and a Goal Keeper fumbling in that order or may be reverse. The level of games we were expecting has not been on display at all and the draws has been as irritating as the vuvuzela.
So inspite of the fast paced game at half time one had the feeling that the Brazil Vs North Korea Match will head to another draw and perhaps its better to call it a day . But glad i am that i put up for some more time to witness the Best Goal of the tournament plus a stellar show by a brave Korean side that just refused to roll over.
The Asian Minnows making only their second appearance in the World Cup after a gap of 44 years did well to hold the Brazilians level in
first half. But their defense had no answer to the stunning strike from Brazil defender Maicon. It was one of those goals that the Brazilians are known for that endears them to entire planet. Maicon rammed from a tight angle as the ball swirled in to the goal post to break the deadlock in the 54th Minute. Elano than added another one for the 5 time champions in 71th minute courtesy some brilliant set up work by Robinho.. Koreans however showed they are ready to play at this level by some aggressive play which finally paid dividends when Ji Yun-Nam put one for his country in the 89th Minute.
Earlier in the first half it was the Koreans who made first attempt at Goal in the 10th minute that the Brazilian goal keeper was able to collect. Though the Brazilians had more ball possession they were thwarted by a strong Korean Defense who themselves made inroads in small bursts every now and then through out the first half.
The Yun-Nam goal in last minutes was more of a consolation in terms of Points but it was nonetheless a memorable night for the Koreans. They have every reason to believe thay have as much of a chance as any other team in the group. And if they continue to play the way they played tonight, they may as well replicate their Dream Run of 1966. Brazil though will have to do some quick thinking. They were good but only in patches. Not enough to take them to another trophy. Dunga may well relook at his strategies for he got the team he wanted, Now he will have to deliver the result that The Brazilians want.
Trivia: Maicon’s and Yun Nam’s goals today means the defenders have outscored the forwards by 8 goals to 6 so far in this WC.
