FIFA world cup 2010 Preview: South Korea Vs Nigeria

South Korean fans

Theoretically all 4 teams still have a chance to progress to the next round.

Here are the standings in group B:

Argentina 6, +4, 5/1

South Korean fans

Korea Republic 3, -1, 3/4Greece 3, -1, 2/3Nigeria 0, -2, 1/3

If Greece bt Agrentina and South Korea beat Nigeria, then there would be a 3-way tie between Greece, Nigeria and South Korea and it would come down to goal difference. For Argentina to be knocked out, they would have to lose by 3-0 or more.

Assuming that Argentina is in, there is one slot for the other 3 teams to fight for.

South Korea looks to be in the pole position to go through as the second team. They only need to equal the result of Greece’s match against Argentina.

For Greece, they need to

-either beat Argentina and hope for Korea to draw or lose to Nigeria

-or draw with Argentina and hope for Korea to lose to Nigeria.

For Nigeria, they need to beat beat Korea and hope that Argetina bt Greece. If Argentina bt Greece (which is very much a distinct possibility), then a Nigerian win over Korea would mean they would have the best goal difference among the 3 teams. So, even though Nigeria is at the bottom of the table right now, if they bt S. Korea, they are almost guaranteed a spot in the round of 16. Anything less than a victory and they are out.

Keeping in mind the situation above, that Nigeria need to win and Korea only need a draw would have an impact on how the 2 teams may approach the match. If Korea go into the match with a “draw” mentality, that could be dangerous and they could be done in a dangerous Nigeria who have Martins and Yakubu in their ranks. Shitu and Yobo are 2 solid defenders with lot of EPL expreience.

Korea will obviously depend a lot on the services of Park. The untiring three-lung (Ji-sung) Park has already scored against Greece and will be the catlyst for the Korean attacks.

This one promises to be an interesting match. Let me stick my neck out and say 2-1 to Nigeria!
