Nobody would have given Aizawl FC an inkling of a chance, to even stay afloat in the league, let alone win it. Incidentally, they had been relegated from the top division in the previous season, but as a couple of Goan clubs had pulled out of the I-League, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) decided to bring the minnows from Mizoram back.
What followed was nothing short of a fairytale run by Khalid Jamil and his men, as they went on to eclipse giants like East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC, to win the league for the first time in the history of the club.
