Football promotion and money making 101 for the I-league

As the new I-League season draws near, many Indian football fans are still wondering if they would even get a chance to see some of the footballing talents of the country on TV. The AIFF continues to be plagued by what we can diagnose as the INDIAN DISEASE; bureaucracy and corruption ( not pointing fingers at the AIFF though since no scams haven’t surfaced yet). Ok, I’m not going to be pointing fingers at the AIFF but since the AIFF seems to be suffering from lack of sponsors, revenue which has affected the way the I-league is functioning; here are a few things that can help promote the league and hopefully make some money out of it.

TV Rights ????

TV is a really big way to promote the sports and gain viewership but now a days there is a bigger thing than the idiot box, its big brother the Internet! Though i hate to point it out but the IPL that was simultaneously broad casted on YouTube along with TV helped reach more viewers.Though broadcasting on the Internet may not help AIFF gain more money at least in the foreseeable future; it could help the I-league gain more viewers and upto an extent some revenue if well promoted. It was sad that many Indian fans could not watch their team during many of the games they played out in the recent months and Indian football is surely going to lose fans if it continues in the coming years.

Betting

Well, I’m not sure if betting is legal in the country or not but it is one of the biggest money earners in the big European leagues. I’m also not sure how the AIFF is going to control match fixing if betting is ever legalised but it’s sure to bring in some much needed money for the game.

Promotion

Well apart from teams like Pune FC and Shillong Lajong, no other clubs have really been promoting themselves in the right way. Facebook, twitter and freestyle shows, these are some of the things that youngsters relate to nowadays. Shillong Lajong and Pune FC are the most connected to their fans because of their active role on the Internet. It’s high time that other clubs also start promoting themselves and start making some money for themselves as well. Zee Sports had done a real #@$y job of promoting the league and it should be made by the clubs themselves that they play atleast their home games to a decent crowd.
