Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney will be one of the players who will be keenly watched and talked about this World Cup. He comes into the tournament as the name on every England fan’s lips. Known for his phenomenal work rate, clinical finishing, willingness to play for the team cause and an explosive temper , Wazza is expected to lead England to glory, just like he single handedly led Manchester United‘s title defence. Even as a teenager, Wayne was destined for glory, and he has proved it time and again in the EPL. At Manchester United, he was under Cristiano Ronaldo‘s shadow for a while by being played out of position to feed the Portuguese talisman. With the departure of Ronaldo and Tevez, Rooney became Manchester United’s chief marksman and lit up the campaign with 34 goals before being hit by injury. Considered the Premier League’s best talent, football’s greatest tournament is where Wayne is yet to prove himself. His preparation for the 2006 WC was marred by injury and he never got in the groove once the proceedings kicked off. To make things worse, he got himself sent off for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho of Portugal, with England bowing out of the tournament on penalties in the quarter final. Over time, the player has matured and learnt to control his temper. His rebellious never-say-die attitude and ability to vivify the team spirits make Wazza a mighty force to be reckoned with. With a great season behind him, Admiral Rooney will go into the WC with plenty of confidence. If he does deliver, he can truly lay claim to be one of the best players in history and fulfill his destiny.
