All teams have played 2 matches. Mexico play Uruguay while, France take on South Africa in the final matches of group A.
With the French team in jeopardy (following the “French Revolution”) and South Africa on the brink of being the first host-nation to be knocked out in the first round, nothing less than a victory is enough for the both teams to go to the next round. Even a victory does not guarantee them a spot on the round of 16.
Current Standings:
points, goal difference, goals scored/conceded
Uruguay 4, +3, 3/0Mexico 4, +2, 3/1France 1, -2, 0/2South Africa 1, -3, 1/4
In case of a tie,
1. The Goal Difference is looked at first. If still equal,
2. Then the goals scored. If still equal,
3. Then head-to-head. If still equal,
4. Then a coin is flipped. If still equal,
What the S Africans need to do in order to qualify?
1. Hope that Uruguay and Mexico do not draw their match. Because if they do, then both will finish on 5 points and go through to the round of 16.
2. If Uruguay beat Mexico by 1-0, then Mexico’s goal difference would become +1. SA would have to win 4-0 against France to go to the next round. 4-0 win for SA would mean that thei GD would be boosted to +1 and they would have then scored more goals(5) than Mexico (3). If Uruguay wins 2-0, then SA would have to win by 3-0 or 4-1.
3. If Mexico beats Uruguay, then it becomes even more difficult for SA. 1-0 to Mexico would mean SA would have to win by 5-0. If its 2-0, then 4-0 and so on.
So basically SA would either have beat France heavily and hope there is a result Rustenburg or hope that either Mexico or Uruguay are trounced badly and they win against France.
What France need to do in order to qualify?
1. Hope that Uruguay and Mexico do not draw their match. Because if they do, then both will finish on 5 points and go through to the round of 16.
2. If Uruguay beat Mexico by 1-0, then Mexico’s goal difference would become +1. France would have to win 3-0 against SA to go to the next round. If Uruguay wins 2-0, then France would still have to score 3, since a 2-0 win would tie them on GD with Mexico but they would have scored fewer goals than Mexico.
3. If Mexico wins 1-0, then France would have to win 4-0 If Mexico wins 2-0, then France will have to win by 3-0.
Both , SA and France need to score at least 3 goals to give themselves a chance to qualify. With nothing to lose, and the French in total disarray, this could yet bring out of the host nation.
Nothing is certain about France yet. What team will they play? Will all players show up? Things look pretty bad for Les Bleus. Some will say, especially the Irish, that justice has been done.
