Indian sports stars defend Mithali Raj after she is trolled on Twitter over choice of dress

Australia v India - NatWest Women's Quadrangular Series
The Indian skipper received some heinous messages from trolls

Not for the first time, Indian women's cricket team captain Mithali Raj received flak from trolls on Twitter after she posted a selfie on social media. She was shamed by users for her choice of dress and received a bagful of negative comments.

Here is the post that started it all:

She received a series of indecent comments, who termed her dress as "not good" and unworthy of an "Indian woman."

However, there were various other users as well who stood up for the cricketing great and defended her choice to wear whatever she wants.

She also found support from some of India's leading sportspersons, who spoke out against the trolling and questioned some of the comments made on the picture posted by her.

Leading them was star wrestler Sushil Kumar, who in an interview with Republic TV, slammed the people trolling Mithali and said it was "a matter of humanity".

He said, "It's a matter of what a person thinks. The kind of people of who talk about our athletes and sportspersons in such a manner should not be encouraged. They unnecessarily cause stress to the players and instead, they should support them."

Another wrestler spoke out against the menace in the form of Vinesh Phogat. Using the hashtag #everydaysexism, she asked why it is that only women are questioned on what they wear and when the prevailing situation will change.

Cricketer Robin Uthappa also lent his support to Mithali and termed the trolls as "silly minds". He stated that he was disappointed to see that the Indian culture is stuck in the same situation.

It is certainly heartening to see fellow sportspersons coming out in numbers and speaking out against such trolls.
