Liverpool knock Chelsea out of the League cup

Chelsea have been knocked out of the Carling Cup after an uninspiring home ground loss to Liverpool.

After finally getting into the groove mid way through the second half, Liverpool scored two goals in quick succession and Chelsea nothing in reply. Torres again looked out of sorts although, one can argue the service to him from Lampard and co was very poor.

Chelsea and Liverpool started the match in typical cagey fashion and Phil Dowd could have easily changed the outcome of the match early on as David Luiz went down in the penalty area. The enigmatic Brazilian was booked for diving though it could have gone either way as Luiz was brought down, albeit seemingly mid-dive.

The penalty drama continued at the other end as Alex performed a ‘Kalou at Valencia’ move dealing with a cross with a flailing left arm to award Andy Carroll a penalty. Carroll, whose goal scoring record since he moved to Merseyside mirrors Torres’ Chelsea exploits, went for power down the middle and Turnbull saved it to keep the scores level.

McEachran then limped off with an injury and Ramires was the replacement although his experience hardly shone through this evening. Still he was one of the best in a blue shirt!

Then the Reds goals came. Maxi again followed by Kelly. Chelsea threw on the experience of Anelka for the hugely ineffective Lukaku ( who was lucky to still be on the pitch after a horror tackle on Henderson ) and Mata for Malouda. AVB needs to teach Lukaku what a first touch is, his target play was shocking.

Nothing came from the changes though, as the Reds fans proudly sung their anthem, whilst Chelsea fans followed their club by making a quicker than expected exit. AVB will be hoping he doesn’t follow suit.
