The venues for the 2012 London Games are too interesting, beautiful, and historic to try and cover in one blog post. This post is the third and final of three parts dedicated to the noteworthy venues for the 2012 Summer Olympiad.
Olympic Park (Cont’d)
While smaller in size than the adjacent Aquatics Centre, the wedge-shaped Water Polo Arena is yet another 100% temporary venue that is just plain cool. As with many other structures, its roof, which is inflatable, is also made from…PVC! This will be the first time an Olympics has built a dedicated venue for water polo. The venue’s brilliance is best exhibited after the sun sets, with the lighting suggesting rippled water, perhaps? Makes me think of a giant water slide!
For all the architectural gems in the Olympic Park, no other stadium is more stunning than the London Velodrome, the host of indoor cycling for the 2012 Games. It’s difficult to find the words that can do justice to describing such an awe-inspiring construction. It’s as if the architects kept the Olympic Motto (“Faster, Higher, Stronger”) in mind when designing such a mammoth venue. For such a large structure, it’s hard to believe that the velodrome only seats 6,000. The facility is not only energy-efficient, but it allows a 360-degree view of Olympic Park outdoors. There is no way to wax the poetic about this building’s curves and timber exterior. This design is just plain awesome:
Faster, Higher, Stronger.
