Muller in running for Best Young Player award

FIFA introduced the Best Young Player award in 2006 where Lukas Podolski aged 21 at that time was elected the winner. The award continues the tradition of officially recognising the positive impact made by young footballers and is open to all participating players born on or after 1 January 1989. The election takes place on FIFA’s official World Cup website with the help of The FIFA Technical Study Group.

Germany’s Thomas Muller(20) , Mexico’s Giovani Dos Santos (21) and Ghana’s Andre Ayew (20) have been shortlisted for the award, with Muller being the favourite. Here’s why these three made it to the list:

After a great season with Bayern Munich, the young German has grabbed the limelight in a German team not many favored after Ballack was ruled out. Nonetheless, with a desire to prove the world wrong the 20 year old scored 4 goals and turned architect in providing 3 more taking the Germans to the semifinals where he was ruled out due to suspension. His rise to senior football has been a journey to remember.

Giovani Dos Santos:

Called Gio in short, the 21 year Mexican is one of the most recognized faces in the Mexican squad. With dazzling skill and robust runs into the box he has an attitude with a single minded aim for the goal. Dos Santos , a FIFA U-17 World Cup winner is a name to remember for the future.

Andre Ayew:

Andre Ayew says he's no super-star yet

Son of Black Star legend Abedi Pele, the 20 year old midfielder was adjudged man-of-the match in his last game against USA in the second round but missed the quarter-final match due to suspension.The 20-year-old said he has been humbled by the accolades that have greeted his performance at the World Cup.
