Heena Sidhu receives Arjuna award from Presiden Pranab Mukherjee

India’s top sportpersons as well as coaches were honoured by President Pranab Mukherjee at the 2014 National Sports Adventure Awards function at the Durbar Hall, Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand awards were handed out to outstanding athletes from the country on 29th August. The day is celebrated as the national sports day, marking the birth anniversary of hockey legend Dhyan Chand.

Ravichandran Ashwin received the Arjuna award, the only cricketer who received the award this year.

The Arjuna Awards (outstanding achievement in national sports) and the Dhyan Chand Awards (lifetime achievement in sports and games) are given by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The Dronacharya Awards, presented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, are given for excellence in sports coaching.

The Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand awardees received a statue/plaque, scroll of honour and cash prize of Rs. 500,000.

For the first time in 20 years, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country’s highest sporting honour, was not awarded as none of the nominees were deemed to be worthy.

Dronacharya award:

Mahabir Prasad (wrestling); N. Lingappa (athletics), G. Manoharan (boxing), Gurcharan Singh Gogi (judo), Jose Jacob (rowing).

Dhyan Chand award:

Gurmail Singh (hockey), K.P. Thakkar (swimming-diving), Zeeshan Ali (tennis).

Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar:

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (employment of sports persons and sports welfare measures); Jindal Steel Works (community sports–identification and nurturing of budding/young talent); Guru Hanuman akhara (establishment and management of sports academies of excellence); Child Link Foundation of India–Magic Bus (other forms of sports activities not covered in the categories mentioned in the schemes).
