The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced that the 38th edition of the National Games will be held in Uttarakhand from January 28 to February 14 next year. This will mark the first time that the state will host the prestigious multi-sport event.
However, the schedule awaits final approval from the IOA General Assembly, which is set to meet on October 25.
The National Games, which serve as a crucial platform for athletes across India to showcase their skills, will feature 38 sports and is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants, including athletes, officials, and coaches.
This event will give the state an opportunity to highlight its rich cultural heritage and hospitality, alongside its commitment to promoting sports in the country. IOA President PT Usha expressed her excitement about the upcoming National Games.
"We are thrilled to bring the National Games to Uttarakhand, a state that has shown remarkable enthusiasm and commitment to hosting this prestigious event. The Games provide a vital platform for athletes from all over the country to showcase their talents and continue their journey toward international sporting success," she said in a press release, as reported by Sporstar.
The National Games will not only serve as a sporting spectacle but will also promote the state as a destination known for its sports facilities, scenic beauty, and cultural vibrance. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his commitment to delivering a world-class event.
"We are committed to delivering a world-class sporting experience. The National Games will not only be a celebration of sports but also a showcase of Uttarakhand’s rich culture and hospitality," he was quoted as saying.
Uttarakhand's ambition to host the National Winter Games
In addition to hosting the National Games, the state has also shown interest in organizing the National Winter Games in the future. IOA President Usha stated that she is "eagerly" awaiting a formal proposal from the state to host the winter edition of the Games.
This potential expansion of the state’s involvement in national sports highlights the state’s growing dedication to becoming a prominent sporting hub in India.
The 37th edition of the National Games was held in Goa last year, where Maharashtra topped the medal tally with an impressive 228 medals, including 80 gold. The upcoming event in Uttarakhand will be expected to build on the success of the previous editions.
