Indian fencers had an impressive outing in the BRICS Sports Games 2024 on Friday, June 21. They settled for two bronze medals after winning their respective third-place playoff encounters.

Notably, the BRICS Sports Games 2024 is a multisport competition conducted annually by the bloc country members. Currently, Russia has the right to host the competition.

With two bronze medals added to the tally, India’s medal count increased to 18 and they are currently ninth with one gold, two silver, and 14 bronze medals. Russian Federation with 212 gold, 123 silver, and 83 bronze are atop the medal tally.

Moving to the details of the third-place playoff in fencing team foil, the Indian women’s team defeated Bahrain to secure the bronze medal. Earlier, they were beaten by Belarus.

On the other hand, the Indian Epee men's team secured a win over the United Arab Emirates in the third-place playoff encounter. Earlier in the day, the Indian men's Epee team bagged a win over Iraq. Russian Federation secured the gold medal by defeating Belarus.

Disappointing show in Canoe Sprint for India in BRICS Sports Games

On Friday, Indian athletes had a poor outing in Canoe Sprint events as they failed to secure a single medal despite making it to the finals in four different events.

In the Men's Kayaking K-1 500 m final, India settled for the fifth spot, clocking 2:15.529 seconds. On the other hand, in the Men's Kayaking K-2 1000 m final, India finished last, clocking 4:14.095 seconds.

Furthermore, in the Men's Canoeing C-2 1000 m final, India finished seventh, clocking 4:47.864 seconds. In the Women's Canoeing C-2 200 m final, India finished last by clocking 0.52.514 seconds.

Furthermore, in Chess, India (30.5) had to settle for the fourth rank as they missed the bronze medal by just two points. Russian Federation bagged the gold medal with 40.5 points while China and Uzbekistan bagged silver and bronze medals with 35.5 and 32.5 points, respectively, in the BRICS Sports Games.
