The 19th edition of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, saw India send its largest contingent ever of 655 athletes. The Indian superstars came back with an impressive 107 medals that included 28 golds, 38 silvers, and 41 bronzes, marking the country’s best performance at the Games.
While the Asian Games have concluded, another set of champions from the country are gearing up to continue India’s splendid performance in Hangzhou. The country’s para-athletes are all set to take the stage at the Asian Para Games 2023. The event is scheduled to take place from October 22 to 28.
Like the Asian Games, here too, India will send its largest-ever contingent for the prestigious continental event. A remarkable total of 309 athletes, comprising 196 men and 113 women, will represent India at the 4th Asian Para Games.
This is a significant increase from the 188 athletes who graced the last edition of the Games in Jakarta four years ago. The surge in the number of participants is a testament to India's commitment to the Paralympic movement and the growing popularity of para-sports across the nation.
India's contingent will be seen in action in 17 different disciplines at the Asian Para Games. Notably, five sports — canoe, blind football, lawn bowls, rowing, and taekwondo — will make their debut at the Games this year.
Several top athletes will be participating in the games in Hangzhou. Shuttlers Pramod Bhagat, Sukant Kadam, world champion archer Sheetal Devi, table tennis player Bhavina Patel, shooter Avani Lekhara, and javelin thrower Sumit Antil are among the prominent names who will be in action.
Looking ahead to the Asian Para Games, world record holder Antil said:
"The Para Asian Games are a major competition for me. I hope to make another World Record at these competitions. We have been getting a lot of support from TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) and the Government, so we feel there is a weight of responsibility on us to justify the faith they are showing in us."
Anurag Thakur, India's Sports Minister, shares the nation's enthusiasm, as he expressed his hope for the Indian contingent to deliver their best-ever performance at the event. He celebrated the incredible journey of these athletes, stating:
"These athletes exemplify the true essence of sportsmanship and dedication. Their journey is a source of inspiration for all, highlighting that with determination and hard work, one can achieve anything. As a government, we stand firmly behind them and are excited to see them make India proud."
India's previous best performance at the Asian Para Games was in 2018, where the nation secured a total of 72 medals, including 15 gold, 24 silver, and 33 bronze medals.
With an increased contingent and a talented group of para-athletes, there is a strong belief that India can surpass its previous record. They might even cross the 107 medal-mark achieved by India at the Asian Games 2023.
