South Sudan notched up a solid 90-79 win over Puerto Rico in their 2024 Paris Olympics opener against Puerto Rico at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium on Sunday (July 28). They not only survived a strong start by Puerto Rico who led 54-48 in the first half, but also showcased solid effort on both ends of the floor to get their Olympics run on a winning note.
Sudan bounced right back in the second quarter in their maiden appearance at the marquee event. It was an eventful first half as PUR got off to a hot start and had an 8-0 run before Sudan drilled in a couple of free throws to get started. The former edged out the debutants for the lead shooting a healthy 55% from the field and 67 % from the deep.
At the halfway mark, Sudan managed to inch closer and end the second quarter with the scoreboard reading 54-48. Carlik Jones and Nuni Omot had 12 and nine points respectively. Wenyen Gabriel came off the bench and had two points and five rebounds.
Jose Alvarado hit his straps early on with 19 points in the first half and was assisted by Tremont Waters (18 points) as they managed to keep their nose ahead. An injury to the guard in the final seconds of the second quarter saw a cause for concern for PUR. However, he did return to take the floor in the second half. He ended with 26 points, two rebounds, and five assists.
The second half saw the momentum shift towards Sudan as they outscored Puerto Rico 23-15 in the third quarter. The final five minutes saw Puerto Rico trail by six points that later extended to 10 as Sudan continued to stay strong on their defensive front. The final scoreboard saw Jones and Nuni prop up 19 and 12 points respectively. Jok Peter (11 points) and Marial Shayok (15 points) provided the impetus for Sudan off the bench.
