Nic off! Anelka running out of chances

How much longer can Chelsea put up with misfiring striker Nicholas Anelka?

Anelka, who is out of contract in the summer, has scored once in his last 27 games for Chelsea. Hardly the form of the player who won the EPL golden boot in the 2008/9 season.

With a golden opportunity to leave Loftus Road with a point on the weekend, Anelka headed straight at Paddy Kenny when scoring seemed a much easier option.

Look who’s coming up through the ranks Nic…

Apparently Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas read Anelka the riot act after the game for failing to capitalise on the opportunity to score. However, strikers do miss opportunities and we measure their character by their response in the next game. The penalty miss vs. Everton.

So nonchalantly, so Luzhniki stadium, Anelka strode up to the ball and missed the goal completely. He has made some impact off the bench this season, coming on to provide Torres that magical goal against United, but he can’t score.

This ChelseaChief.com writer suggests: if you can’t score you don’t start. Torres included! Chelsea fans would think we have an embarrassment of riches up front to choose from. We don’t.

  • Kalou – out of form, most fans want him out. Myself included, he’s had his chance and he’s not improving or top class.
  • Anelka – can’t score, doesn’t want to resign a new contract, time to move the 33yr old on.
  • Drogba – not his usual self anymore. Mourinho’s style of Carvalho, Ballack, Essien and Drogba bullying players off the pitch has now turned into AVB’s graceful passing and interplay between Mata, Romeu and Sturridge. On that note, it would be good to see Joe Cole back in Blue.
  • Lukaku – give him time and he’ll be brilliant
  • Sturridge – see above, and adding to that he is brilliant NOW and deserves to play every match
  • Torres – hitting form, Stoke aside (and that miss) has been very good this season

Fourteen year old and £2m striker Olusaseyi Ojo has the characteristics of a striker that can make him world class. He featured in his first u/16 England match on Thursday night and didn’t look out of place in a 4-0 victory over Wales. Whilst a fee has been agreed, it appears the midfielder who currently plays at MK Dons will join Chelsea’s academy in January.
