Exhibition of NorthEast Sports Prowess North East India comprising of the Seven Sisters and one brother has been the power house of Sports in India. This region produces the best Footballers, Archers, Boxers and athletes in India. With an intention to identify the sporting talents and to offer opportunities to the local sportspersons, the North East Sports Festival was conceptualized in the year 1987 .

Under the aegis of the Assam Sports Society this sports meet is being organized annually where all the eight states send their sports-persons to compete in different events . This meet was also aimed at building a competitive atmosphere and has been actively sponsored by corporates and Sports Authority of India Limited (SAIL). On the lines of the South Asian Games, this regional sports meet has been able to generate considerable interest from sports lovers and sportspersons from the region .
The major discipline in this meet includes athletics, archery, boxing, badminton, table tennis, wushu and judo and football. Barring football, all the other disciplines is for both men and women.
But there were serious problems which had been raised on the overall conducts of the game in its various editions . Infrastructure has also been a very genuine concern in organizing event of this magnitude. The concerned authorities need to look into the upgrade of facilities and also must ensure that such facilities need to be well maintained and upgraded from time to time.
The wonder kid of India
The 24th North East Games were held in Meghalaya capital Shillong this year in the month of April . The total number of participants was doubled in this edition of the games as athletes this time numbered 1558. All the 8 states of the North East (including Sikkim) were represented in this edition of the games. The Powerful Manipur contingent emerged as the overall winners of the 24th edition of the North East Games with an overall tally of 97 medals which included 39 gold, 22 silver and 36 bronze. Assam came a close second with a final count of 91 medals which included 29 gold, 37 silver and 25 bronze.
The North East Sports meet is an important annual event where sportspersons and officials converge and compete against each other to prepare themselves for bigger events. This has provided facilities and opportunities for the budding talents to aspire to compete against tougher challengers in National and International scenes.
