London - British women smashed their own world record to win the team pursuit cycling event Saturday, thrashing the US in the final here at the Olympics.
Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell sped to Britain’s fifth cycling gold of the Olympics in 3 minutes 14.051 seconds after breaking the world record in both earlier rounds and reducing it by 1.7 seconds in the Olympics as a whole.
The US’ Sarah Hammer, Dotsie Bausch and Lauren Tamayo limped home more than five seconds behind Britain after easing off as their prospects of victory vanished.
Bronze went to Canada’s Tara Whitten, Gillian Carleton and Jasmin Glaesser, who beat Australia to take their country’s first medal in the velodrome.
