Olympic tennis: Federer content with silver medal

Olympics Day 9 - Tennis

London, Aug 6 (IANS) Swiss tennis great Roger Federer has said he was satisfied with an Olympic silver medal, following his loss to Briton Andy Murray in the men’s singles final.

“I am very happy. I am satisfied. I think this is as good as I could do during these championships. Andy was much better than I was today in many aspects of the game. For me, it’s been a great month. I won Wimbledon, became World No.1 again, and I got silver,” Federer was quoted as saying Sunday by Xinhua.

“I am very, very proud honestly to have won a silver. I had a very emotional tournament from start to finish. I could have lost in the first round against Falla. Same thing obviously with Del Potro. So I feel very, very happy.”

Federer was just one step away from completing a career Golden Slam — winning all four Grand Slam events and an Olympic singles gold medal, so he did not rule out the chances of competing at Rio Olympics in four years’ time.

“I would love an Olympic gold in singles. But I am very happy with the silver and I already have the doubles gold from Beijing. So this has been an amazing ride for me, these last 10 days being part of the Olympics and representing Switzerland. This was particularly emotional. We’ll see about Rio. It’s a fascinating country. I would love to be part of it,” he said.

In a fully occupied Centre Court at the All England Club, the thunderous crowd of almost 15,000 fans were supporting Murray, and this was not a heartbreaking experience for the Swiss.

“It’s different. Maybe more patriotic. I knew it was going to be good support for Andy. But, honestly, I have experienced tougher crowds for my opponent in the past everywhere I have played all around the world. I am sure that gave him a lift and made him play well, once he was in the lead in particular, he never looked back. But it’s not the reason I lost the match.”
