It was a mixed performance by Indian athletes on day 2 of the 2nd Asian Youth Games being held in Nanjing, China.
Although none of the Indian athletes were able to win any medals on the second day of the games, the performance of some of the players were really remarkable.
The best news of the day came from Squash, where India’s Kush Kumar made it to the finals in the men’s singles event, and assured India of at least a silver medal. Kush Kumar defeated NG Eain Yow of Malaysia 11-6 11-13 11-9 11-8 in the semi-finals. He will now take on top seeded Mohammad Syafiq Kamal of Malaysia in the gold medal match.
In table tennis, Abhishek Yadav has made it to the semi-finals in the men’s singles event. Abhishek Yadav defeated Dunley Foo of Malaysia 11-6, 11-5, 15-13, 5-11, 18-16 to get into the medal rounds.
In shooting, India’s Mampi Das finished 6th in the final of the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event. Mampi qualified for the final of the Women’s 10m Air Rifle with a score of 412.3, which was third best in the qualification. Her performance in the finals was not that good, and she had to settle for the sixth spot. He Zichao of China won gold, Kim Jehee of Korea won silver and Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore won the bronze medal.
Another Indian shooter, Maheshwari Chauhan, finished 5th in the finals of the Women’s Skeet event. Che Yufei of China won the gold, Sarah Mohammed of Qatar won the silver and Yu Tianyuan of China won the bronze.
In tennis, unseeded Indian player Aman Agarwal defeated 8th seeded John Tivanka Sharmal Dissanyake of Sri Lanka 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Men’s Singles event. He will now take on Dmitry Popko of Kazakhstan for a place in the quarter-finals.
In Judo, India’s Pinky Balhara lost to Khutan Tseregbaatar of Mongolia in the first round of the girls’ 52kg, whereas in boys’ 66kg, Vijay Kumar Yadav lost to Ko Jaekyoung of Korea in the opening round.
