Amid the controversy of Sepp Blatter’s comments about racism over the last few days, Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has spoken of his shock at racism in top flight football.

The Scottish manager, who recently celebrated twenty-five years at Old Trafford, says he cannot believe race rows still occur in the Premier League.

“I can’t believe there is any sort of issue over race in the game given the number of black players who take part. It’s such a rare, rare occurrence for this sort of thing to surface.

“I can’t even remember the last time allegations of this sort were levelled against a player.”

United’s Patrice Evra was subject to racist abuse from Liverpool and Uruguay striker, Luis Suarez, when the sides met earlier on this season and Suarez was recently charged by the FA.

Liverpool have, however, said they would expect him to request a hearing.

An FA statement said: “It is alleged that Suarez used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Manchester United’s Patrice Evra contrary to FA rules.

“It is further alleged that this included a reference to the ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race of Patrice Evra.”

Sir Alex will perhaps now want to put this controversial issue behind him and his side before this weekend’s away trip to the Liberty Stadium to face Swansea.

He did, however, take time to hope for no repeat of the recent allegations and on-field disputes in British football.

“I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence that two cases are going on. Let’s hope we don’t get three – but this is 2011, for goodness sake.”
