North Campus, Delhi University: The five-day multi-sport invitational tournament today kick started amid much fanfare at the SGTB Khalsa College. Sardar Harvinder Singh Sarna, chairman of SGTB Khalsa College governing body, inaugurated the event, which will be witnessing participation from almost 20 institutions across the disciplines of hockey, basketball and volleyball.Addressing the representatives from college, university, sport bodies and participating teams, Sardar Sarna said that the tournament is a great initiative and will be a massive boost for sport development at university and institutional level. He praised the college authorities for organising tournament in the memory of late Professor Pargat Singh, late Professor Praveen Kaur Sahni and late Dr Ratan Singh Anand. “They all contributed immensely in developing sport at the grassroots level,” he said.
Pargat Singh is credited with successfully developing the sports infrastructure at SGTB Khalsa College where he served as sports teacher for close to four decades. Similarly, Praveen Kaur Sahni, whose stint as sports teacher at SGTB Khalsa College was between 1981-2010, is recognised for her exceptional qualities as leader and administrator. She played a key role in the team and venue management at the 1982 Asian Games and 2010 Commonwealth Games.
On the other hand, Dr. Rattan Singh Anand is admired for his philanthropy work and was associated with many social organisations. During his lifetime, he helped many under privileged in education and other areas.
Speaking on this occasion, SGTB Khalsa College Principal Dr. Jaswinder Singh said that the college has contributed significantly to the national and international arena of sports. “These achievements were due to the untiring efforts of (Late) S. Pargat Singh and (Late) Mrs. Parveen Kaur, Directors of Physical Education. Both of them, being outstanding sportspersons themselves, contributed immensely in encouraging young talents in sports both at the college and national level,” he said.
In the inaugural match of the day, SGTB Khalsa College defeated Stephen’s College 78-57 to earn its first points in the pool A of the basketball tourney. Ravinder Singh of SGTB Khalsa College was adjudged man of the match, scoring 23 baskets.
The tournament will be played in both round robin and knockout format in each of the three sports. The teams are divided in two groups of four teams and will play each other once. The top-two teams from each group will qualify to play the semi-finals.
Institutions such as YMCA, BSES, Northern Railway, CISF, CRPF, Rajasthan Rifles, Faith Club, Hindu College and hosts SGTB Khalsa College are participating in this multi-sport invitational event.
