The famous 1966 finals where England beat Germany and that was the only time they have won a trophy, but the rivalry between these two goes back to the World War and when it comes to football the two titans are in for a battle today.
The last meeting between the two teams was on November 2008 when England beat Germany 1-2 in a friendly.
Having passed the group stage Germany looks to be more of a better team scoring more goals with depth in the team whereas England is looking for that elusive team chemistry.
The football legend from Germany Franz Beckenbauer says, “It’s time to get over it” (1966 finals). He also added that the English were “stupid” to have finished second in their group setting them up with his countrymen. Nice way to spice up things Franz!
The Brazilian born striker Cacau will be out of the match after pulling a stomach muscle in training. Bastian Schweinsteiger is also a concern for the England clash but Miroslav Klose will be available again after following suspension.
England has a full strength squad and they won’t have any excuses if they don’t win the match. The pressure will be on Rooney who has yet scored a goal in this tournament and Capello will probably play a 4-5-1 formation so half of the goal scoring opportunities will depend on the striker.
German youngster Ozil has emerged as one of the stars of the World Cup and England will have to keep a close watch on him. According to Ghana’s John Pantsil he says, “If England want to neutralise the threat of Mesut Ozil they need only to man-mark him.
“I think England have to ask Gareth Barry to stand on him. Because if one player stands on him I don’t think he will be part of the game. He will be off.”
England has played Germany four times at the World Cup and each game has finished after the 90 minutes when it has gone to extra time or penalties.
