1884 - 1st double-century stand in Test cricket, Percy McDonnell and Billy Murdoch scored 207 runs for Australia against England.
1977 - Geoffrey Boycott scored his 100th first-class hundred . He was the first player to hit his 100th ton in a Test match.
2005 – Shane Warne became the first bowler to take 600 Test wickets. He achieved this feat by dismissing Marcus Trescothick at Old Trafford.
1965 – Former Australian captain Bill Woodfull died. He captained Australia in the famous 1932/33 Bodyline series.

2012- Mexico took the gold medal at the Summer Olympics, upsetting favorites Brazil 2-1 in London.
1966 - Nigel Martyn, former Everton goalkeeper was born.
Baseball
1929 - Babe Ruth hit his 500th career home run.
1951 - The first major league baseball game to be televised in color was broadcast. The Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Boston Braves 8-1.
Olympics
1948 – Summer Olympics began in London.
1984 - Carl Lewis won his fourth gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Golf
1991 – John Daly wins PGA Championship. An amazing thing that happened with Daly that he was ninth alternate to even make the field. But enough players dropped out to give him the chance. He took advantage and won the tournament by one shot.
