1981: Birthday of Iker Casillas, captain of both La Liga club Real Madrid and the Spanish national team.

1982: Birthday of Petr Cech, who plays for Chelsea and the Czech Republic as a goalkeeper.

1998: Real Madrid beat Juventus to win their seventh European Cup/Champions League trophy, more than thirty years after their sixth one.

2003: Aston Villa appoint Leeds United’s David O’Leary as new manager in 2002/03.

1943: Birthday of Deryck Murray, one of West Indies’ finest wicketkeepers, behind the stumps in 62 Tests between 1963 and 1980.

1977: Birthday of Anjum Chopra, a left-handed opener for India who won the Arjuna award, one of India’s highest sporting honours, in 2007. She was one of India’s premier batsmen and played in four World Cups.

1982: Birthday of Imran Farhat, left-hand Pakistan batsman.

1967: Birthday of Germany’s Beate Reinstadler. (Winner, 1989 Futures Israel).

1969: Birth of Alberto Mancini, Argentinian tennis player.

1983: Larry Holmes beats Tim Witherspoon in 12 for Heavyweight boxing title.

1983: Michael Dokes & Mike Weaver fight to a draw in 15 rounds for heavyweight boxing title.

1985: Larry Holmes beats Carl Williams in 15 for heavyweight boxing title.
