2007: Sachin Tendulkar made history on this day by playing an Andre Nel delivery towards mid-off and scampering down the pitch to reach 15,000 one-day runs.2002: A hundred on debut for Scott Styris, who made 107 against West Indies in Grenada on this day.

1950: West Indies won their first Test in England, a 326-run thrashing at Lord’s, led by a mystifying display from their young spin twins Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine.

1988: Birth of Ever Banega,an Argentine professional footballer who plays for Valencia CF in Spain mainly as a central midfielder.

1993: Perugia announced their new signing, a forward who also happened to be the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

1997: Brazil won their fifth South American Championship/Copa America, beating hosts Bolivia 3-1.

2005: After suffering relegation with Southampton, Kevin Phillips, 31, was snapped up by Aston Villa as manager David O’Leary sought to add more firepower to his attack.

Boxing

1995: George Foreman loses IBF boxing title as he refused to fight Axel Schulz.

Basketball

1981: Birth of Joe Johnson, an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association.
