Cricket:

2012: India’s first Test series without Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. India’s opponents New Zealand failed to take advantage as Cheteshwar Pujara scored 159 in an innings victory at Hyderabad and Virat Kohli got his 2nd Test hundred in Bangalore.

1985: Swing bowler Richard Ellison takes 5 for 46 at the Oval to help dismiss Australia and win England the match. England won the series 3-1 to regain the Ashes.

1933: The end of the longest first-class match played in England (32 hours and 17 minutes) following an agreement between the English and Australian authorities to extend the final Test of the 1975 series to 6 days if the Ashes were still at stake. England followed on 341 runs on the 4th morning but Bob Woolmers 149 ensured that England not only avoided innings defeat but also managed to snatch a draw.

Football:

1970: Birth of former England player and current England U-21 coach Gareth Southgate. Southgate made over 500 league appearances for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.

1977: Birth of former Sweden captain Olof Mellberg, who enjoyed a seven-year spell at Aston Villa and currently plays for Copenhagen.

1979: Birth of QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar. The Brazil international spent seven years at Inter Milan and won the UEFA Champions League in 2010.

1988: Birth of Jerome Boateng. The Bayern Munich defender spent an injury disrupted season at Manchester City following a move from Hamburg.

Tennis:

1987: 15-year-old Michael Chang becomes the youngest man to win US Open tennis match.

1993: Goran Ivanisevic & Daniel Nestor play longest tie-break in US Tennis (Ivanisevic won the tie-break 20-18)

Baseball:

1918: Baseball season ends due to WW I

1964: Masanori Murakami is 1st Japanese player in majors (NY Mets)
