1971: Nacional won their first Copa Libertadores, beating three-time defending champions Estudiantes in a playoff.
1978: Birth of Miroslav Klose, a German professional footballer who plays as a striker for Lazio in the Serie A. Klose holds German nationality and has played 127 times and scored 67 goals for Germany.
1984: Birth of Wesley Sneijder, a Dutch footballer who plays for Galatasaray and the Dutch national team. He was named UEFA midfielder of the season and one of the three best midfielders in the world for 2010 by FIFA.
2011: Liverpool completed the signing of 20-year-old England international Jordan Henderson from Sunderland ahead of the 2011/12 Barclays Premier League season.
Cricket1975: Birth of Andrew Symonds, a former Australian cricket team all-rounder. A two-time World Cup winner, Symonds is a right-handed middle order batsman and alternates between medium pace and off-spin bowling. He is also an exceptional fielder.
1983: The beginning of the third World Cup – and one of the biggest shocks in cricket history. Nine years before they were granted Test status Zimbabwe, inspired by their 34-year-old captain Duncan Fletcher, stunned Australia with a 13-run victory in their first-ever one-day international at Trent Bridge. India went on to win the 1983 World Cup.
1991: Graham Gooch’s unforgettable 154 not out set England up for their first home victory over West Indies for 22 years.
Golf
1964: Jack Nicklaus wins British Open golf tournament. Jack Nicklaus, nicknamed “The Golden Bear”, is an American professional golfer, who is widely regarded as the most accomplished professional golfer of all time, winning a total of 18 career major championships while producing 19 second place and 9 third place finishes in them over a span of 25 years.
Tennis
1956: Birth of Martina Navratilova, who is a retired Czech American tennis player and coach. Billie Jean King, former World No. 1 player regarded Navratilova as “the greatest singles, doubles and mixed doubles player who’s ever lived.”
