Cricket:

1826 – Birth of John Wisden, England cricketer. He will be remembered as a man who gave cricket its Bible – Wisden Almanack. John Wisden’s Almanack has appeared every year since 1864 – the year in which it was first published.

1909 - A brilliant Australian batsman, Archie Jackson was born; one who died young. Archie Jackson, who was considered better than Bradman by his peers, made his debut at only 19 . He averaged 47.40 in his eight matches before he died in 1933, aged 23, of Tuberculosis.

1973 – 1st one-day cricket international for West Indies (versus England). They lost by 1 wicket.

1986 - Birth of another India’s left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha. He has taken 102 Test wickets in 22 Test matches at an average of 31.78. He is an established second-spinner Indian Test team behind Ravichandran Ashwin.

Tennis:

1922 - 17th Davis Cup: USA beat Australia in New York (4-1).

1987 - John McEnroe is fined $17,500 for tirades at US Tennis Open.

1990 - Pete Sampras ends Ivan Lendl’s bid for 9th straight US Open final.

Olympics:

Munich Olympics 1972 Hostage Crisis – One of the Black September guerrillas who had taken 12 Israeli athletes hostage

1972 - On September 5, 1972, terror struck the Munich Olympics as the Palestinian group Black September attacked the 11 Israeli athletes.

Baseball:

1901 – National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues forms.

1918 – Due to World War I, 15th World Series begins a month early.

1914 – Babe Ruth hit his first home run as a professional player in the International League.

Football:

1951 – Paul Breitner, German footballer who played for Bayern Munich and Real Madrid was born. He was known for his defensive partnerships with Franz Beckenbauer and Berti Vogts in the national team.
