Tottenham needed a win here to put the pressure onto their North London rivals Arsenal in the battle for 3rd place and also to ensure they held off the challenge of Newcastle. Adam Whitehurst writes.
Spurs started the game at a blistering pace and were 1-0 up inside 2 minutes in the first half. Adebayor cut in from the left and exchanged a slick one-two with Modric before sliding the ball in a very Henry-esque manner into the far corner past Schwarzer.
Spurs pressed for the majority of the game, but they had to wait till the 63rd minute for them to secure the three points. Aaron Lennon picked up the ball and drove at the Fulham defence before firing a shot towards goal.
The shot was charged down but broke kindly for the onrushing Jermain Defoe, who steered it home to raise himself into the top 10 Spurs scorers of all time list.
Emotions would have been running high and given the twists and turns of the Arsenal game, the atmosphere inside White Hart Lane remained confused but cautiously optimistic.
However Arsenal held on to victory at the Hawthorns and Spurs will have to settle for 4th place, and side with Bayern Munich for the Champions league final.
