Tottenham Hotspur have opened contract talks with star playmaker Luka Modric and are reportedly ready to double his current wages as they look to fend off the advances of London neighbours Chelsea once and for all.
Chelsea openly pursued the Croatian throughout the summer, making at least four offers for him, the last of which amounted to a stupendous £40 million. But Tottenham refused to budge and chairman Daniel Levy managed to keep hold of his most prized asset.
Modric is reportedly on wages of £46,000 per week at Spurs, a figure which could rise to £95,000 (plus bonuses) if talks go as planned. Chelsea were willing to treble those numbers, and finally Levy has accepted that he has to offer better terms to Modric than his current contract in order to keep him at White Hart Lane despite Modric having just under five years to run on his current deal.
Harry Redknapp was quoted earlier this month as saying,
“If he’s worth £40 million, then life tells you that you have to be paid accordingly. You can’t say he is worth that much then pay him the wages of someone worth £5 million. That doesn’t ring true, does it? You have to look after the boy and I am sure we will do that. Hopefully, his future is here.”
Modric has been in the headlines all summer and even went on strike at the start of the season demanding a move to Chelsea but chairman Daniel Levy made a promise to the fans that Modric would be going nowhere and that he meant business. Modric publicly slammed Levy, accusing him of “breaking a gentleman’s agreement” but nothing changed Tottenham’s stance as they kept their star player at the club and are now reaping rich rewards as he looks settled and in top form.
