Upsets and Surprises on day three of Khalsa Sports Fest

North Campus, Delhi University: Upsets and surprises were the order of the day in Wednesday’s round robin matches of multi-sport invitational tournament played at SGTB Khalsa College. Hindu College outclassed fancied Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Basketball and Singhu Sports Club upset a stronger Shyamlal College team in hockey onday three of the sports fest.

The day began with Hindu College outplaying CISF 73-43 in the Pargat Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament in a Pool B match. Riding on Praveen Dova’s 27 baskets, Hindu College dominated the match from the beginning. Dova was awarded man of the match for his brilliant performance. In a Pool A match, on the other hand, SGTB Khalsa College easily beat Rajputana Rifles 75-43. At half time, the host team led 38-20. The skipper Vicky Bansal was the top scorer with 22 points andbagged the Man of the Match award.

In the Praveen Kaur Memorial Hockey Tournament, Singhu Sports club sprung the surprise of the day by beating Shyamlal College 2-0.Singhu Sports club, is now topping Pool A with six points, from two matches.

In another Pool A match, SGTB Khalsa College routed Rajput club, 8-0. Naveen Chiller (two), Pawan Singh, Kamal Sharma, Ajay Kumar, Gautam Sidhanth, Gagan Singh and Surinder scored goals for the winners. For his outstanding display as a playmaker, inside forward Pawan Singh got the man of the match award. Host SGTB Khalsa College is now at secondposition with four points from two matches.

In the Rattan Singh Memorial Volleyball Tournament, the hosts had a fantastic day, winning both their fixtures. In the morning session,SGTB Khalsa College overcame YMCA 25-7, 25-22. From the losing team, Cash Chaudhary played an outstanding game and was awarded the man of the match trophy. In their next match, the host team comfortably beat Delhi State Junior team 25-11, 25-18. The college captain Krishan, got the man of the match award.

Delhi Volleyball Association (DVA) president Kuldip Vats, who was among the eminent visitors to watch matches at SGTB Khalsa CollegeGrounds, lauded the efforts of college authorities on organising a well-staged event. “Such tournaments raise university’s sport profileand maximise the use of sporting infrastructure we have in place,” he said.
