Christiano Ronaldo has courted controversy ever since the ‘wink’ episode at the last World Cup.
It wasn’t a great World Cup for Ronaldo. He scored just one goal in the only game Portugal wasn’t held scoreless — their 7-0 win over North Korea — and despite the captain’s efforts to carry his team, Ronaldo just didn’t get enough help to go deep into the tournament.
Last time around, too, Ronaldo made headlines with his infamous wink at the bench, when he oversaw the referee sending off Rooney when their sides met. This time, though, it looks a lot more innocuous, but headlines have started terming Ronaldo a sore loser already.
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, went with the headline of: “Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Spitting Mad at TV Camera after Portugal Exit” and Irish television pundits are debating the intent. The Sun, of course, is going towards extreme with a headline of: “Ronaldo in world of shame after spit.”
Portugal exited the World Cup with their 0-1 loss to Spain yesterday, David Villa‘s goal the only difference between the two sides. And in spite of Spain’s 61% possession and many attempts on goal, none can deny that Portugal did have their fair share of chances as well.
With this loss, Ronaldo follows Rooney, Ribery and Drogba as the high-profile footballers keep tumbling out of the competition.
